Local animal services and shelters are full and are in desperate need of homes for pets.
At Augusta Animal Services, there are 46 dogs available for adoption and a special adoption fee of $15 is in effect to help want-to-be pet owners take home dogs and cats.
“We are incredibly full and need the community’s help finding homes for all of these loving babies. AAS needs committed adopters; we do not want these animals to be returned,” said Assistant Director Crystal Eskola.
The same is true at other shelters in the area.
The Aiken County Animal Shelter is overcrowded and in crisis, according to Bob Gordon, communications director for the Friends of the Animal Shelter organization.
“A stray or surrendered pet occupies every dog kennel. That’s 84 kennels full, with some containing multiple dogs,” Gordon wrote in an email. “We desperately need adopters and foster volunteers. The shelter is at the critical point where difficult decisions may have to be made.”
Gordon said the shelter took in 450 homeless pets last month, and in the first two weeks of August had taken in 100 strays and surrendered pets, forcing the shelter to set up dog crates in an administrative area.
He attributed the increase in animals to a decline in adoption numbers that are a result of fewer people visiting the shelter amid the uptick in COVID-19 numbers and recent hotter temperatures.
For those unable to consider adoption, Gordon had a request.
“If you find a stray pet, if possible, please hold onto the pet and try to rehome them through the FOTAS Home to Home site until the shelter is out of crisis mode,” he wrote.
Also in Aiken, the SPCA Albrecht Center is offering specials because of its great need for pet placements. Kittens under one year are available for adoption for $25, as are selected dogs. Cats over a year old may be adopted without fees.
