Mondi introduces mono-material, recyclable pet food pouch

VIENNA, AUSTRIA — Mondi has developed a recyclable retort pouch for packaging premium wet pet food products more sustainably. The company introduced this latest offering on Oct. 7.

The RetortPouch Recyclable packaging solution is a high-barrier option designed to replace multi-layer packaging, which tends to be unrecyclable. It is applicable for wet, moist and semi-moist pet food products, as well as similar human food products.

The mono-material film used in these packages can manage short processing times under high temperatures, making them ideal for retort processes that typically use aluminum cans or cartons. The material is fully recyclable and maintains “exceptional shelf life,” Mondi stated.

The company has been developing and testing its RetortPouch Recyclable solution for more than two years. The launch of this latest solution takes Mondi one step closer to achieving its goal of transitioning all its packaging products to reusable, recyclable or compostable options by 2025.

“Sustainability is a top priority for Mondi and we are committed to make this innovation available for all our customers by using our customer-centric approach, EcoSolutions,” said Eveline Wagner-Hahn, managing director at Mondi Korneuburg. “Our fully recyclable solution helps to lower the product’s environmental footprint and customers can be confident that their products will be completely protected throughout manufacturing and transportation and meet their sustainability goals. This is another example of our award-winning expertise in creating sustainable food packaging and delivering circular-driven solutions that work for the customer, the end user and the environment.”

At PACK EXPO in September, Mondi Consumer Flexibles exhibited three of its newer sustainable packaging solutions for the pet food processing industry, including its FlexiBag in Box for omnichannel applications, the PE FlexiBag Recycable collection, and its FlexiBag Recycle Handle solution.
