When she was 16, Lisa fled her home with nothing but a bag of her belongings and her beloved cat and entered residence at Shelterhouse.

Lisa, whose name has been changed to protect her identity for safety reasons, recently expressed how important it was to have her cat with her at Shelterhouse, which is a local nonprofit organization that serves people impacted by domestic violence and sexual assault.

When she was first in shelter, Lisa felt alone and often “so depressed that she couldn’t get out of bed” but she said her cat refused to let her do that.

“He pushes me to get up! To play, to feed him, to just bite my toes,” she said.
