Farewell, dear friend: Our beloved cat’s dying days bring a flood of tears. And love

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – It’s a day that I always knew would come, but that didn’t make it any easier. We had to say goodbye to our old cat, Malkovich, earlier this month. Mal was 15. We had 11 beautiful years with him after getting him from Animal Care and Control in Charleston in 2010. It wasn’t enough time. Pets are family. It’s hard to let them go. I’ve cried more for that cat over the last three weeks than I have over some people that I’ve lost in my life. Mal was our first family pet. We went to

Scientists uncover the secret to fishing cats’ hunting success

When the famously enigmatic fishing cat hunts in deep water, it keeps calm and stays still. At least, most of the time.   Asia’s Prionailurus viverrinus prowls swamps and marshes at night, searching for fish that could make for a nutritious meal. Depending on how deep the water is, the wild feline switches its hunting strategy to maximize its energy gain, scientists report December 24 in Mammalia. The report offers “the first detailed look at how the fishing cat hunts,” says coauthor Tiasa Adhya, a Kolkata-based biologist. One of the foremost experts on the species, Adhya in 2010 cofounded The

Cats on Road Trips: What Could Go Wrong?

Sarah Schacht, her husband, Guillaume Rosney, and their cat, Effie, took a winter vacation to the Palm Springs area but found their flight home to Seattle postponed by airline disruptions in the coronavirus surge. So they chose a hairy alternative for the 1,200-mile journey: driving a rental SUV in mid-January, stopping for a hotel stay. With their cat. Effie, a burly caramel tabby, made some “sad cat sounds” on day one of her first long car excursion, according to her owners, but she really put her paw down when it came time to leave the hotel for the second travel

OKC Animal Welfare saves thousands of cats through Trap-Neuter-Release program

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) – It’s usually a program that’s prevalent in rural areas: Trap-Neuter-Return. But here in the Oklahoma City metro, it’s saving thousands of cats’ lives every year.  Trap-Neuter-Return is a humane alternative to trap-and-kill, which aims to manage community cat populations. With TNR, roaming cats are trapped, spayed or neutered, vaccinated and given an ear tip before being returned to where they were found. Ear tipping helps people in the community know which cats have already received care through the TNR program. Cats with ears that have been tipped, showing they’ve been through the TNR program. Cat charity CEO quits over colleague keeping 18 cats in house | Animal welfare

The chief executive of the UK’s largest cat protection charity has stepped down after a row over the welfare of 18 cats being kept in his colleague’s three-bedroom house. Concerned about cat welfare and the charity’s reputation, Charles Darley, 59, said Cats Protection should not support the chair of trustees, Linda Upson, in keeping the pets on welfare grounds. “To have a chair that apparently isn’t adhering to best practice is very damaging to the charity, and disastrous for staff morale,” Darley told the Guardian. “Defra guidelines say cats should be given sufficient space to hide from other cats and
