Massachusetts schools are using dogs to detect Covid-19

A pair of specially-trained dogs, 14-month-old labs named Huntah and Duke, began their training in May 2021, and now roam the halls of schools in the Freetown-Lakeville Regional School District. The Bristol County Sheriff’s Office worked closely with Florida International University to train the dogs, said Jonathan Darling, the agency’s public information officer. Meet the police dogs sniffing out COVID-19 at Massachusetts schools

When Huntah and Duke aren’t busy playing catch, the two dogs are usually detecting the presence of COVID-19 in their community. In the past year, the 14-month-old Labrador retrievers have worked at 15 different schools in Massachusetts. “They love to work,” Jonathan Darling, Bristol County Sheriff’s public information officer, told CBS News Wednesday. “And then when they’re not working, they just want to give you kisses and we love it. They’re so cute.” K9s Huntah and Duke visited Norton Middle School today for some Covid-detection work. Thanks to Supt. Baeta and everyone from @NortonSchools and @FIU_Forensics for the help. pic.twitter.com/5NdOgIQP2W

Health ministry officials in Quebec, Canada had their tails between their legs Saturday after facing backlash for new coronavirus-related curfew rules that don’t allow dog owners to walk their pets between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. A previous version of the curfew rules allowed residents to help their pets take care of business in the overnight hours, provided they remained within 1 kilometer (3,280 feet) of their home, CTV News reported. Why the exception wasn’t included in the newest rules wasn’t clear, the outlet reported. “What if you can’t walk your dog [before curfew] because of work or other restraints?”

Recent animal COVID-19 cases found mostly in cats

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – At the start of the pandemic, veterinarians at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln said that household pets like dogs accounted for most of the animals testing positive for COVID-19. Recently, most positive cases have been seen in cats, especially larger ones in zoo settings. “Felines and cats in general – even the domestic cats, the big cats – all have that same receptor that humans have that COVID, or coronavirus, attaches to,” said Dr. Kelly Heath, director and attending veterinarian of UNL’s Animal Care Program.
