    Fromm recalls 5,500 cases of canned dog food

    MEQUON, WIS. — Fromm Family Foods announced a voluntary recall on Oct. 1 including 5,500 cases of its shredded dog food formulas due to potentially elevated levels of vitamin D. Consumers were warned to stop feeding the recalled products immediately. The recall includes four products distributed to neighborhood pet stores across the United States. Each product included in the recall was sold in 12-can multipacks.     How smart is your dog? Hungarian experiment puts one breed to the test

    All pet dogs are good at understanding their human owners, but a rare few dogs have an uncanny ability to learn and remember object names, a new study finds. Hungarian researchers tested the ability of six border collies to remember the names of new toys. The four-part experiment involved teaching the dogs up to 12 new words per week and then testing their ability to remember the toys for as long as two months. The researchers did not have a specific breed in mind when they began recruiting for the study, which was published Tuesday in the journal Royal Society

    FDA warns of hundreds of dog deaths, illnesses linked to company’s pet food

    The Food and Drug Administration is warning dog owners after it found that products made by Midwestern Pet Foods, Inc. have been “associated with the illness or death of hundreds of pets who had eaten the company’s dry dog food.” The agency said in a release on Tuesday that it has issued a warning letter to the Indiana-based company after finding as of Aug. 9 that more than 130 pet deaths and more than 220 illnesses may be linked to eating brands of pet food manufactured by Midwestern.     A voluntary recall was issued here in August of 2021 for frozen dog food sold at PetSmart stores in the USA. The specific sort of dogfood included with the recall was made by the Wet Noses Natural Dog Treat Company of Monroe, Washington, and it affects approximately 51,000 packages of frozen dog food. If you’ve purchased Simply Nourish frozen dog food in the recent past, this is important. Per the announcement from Wet Noses, consumers should “stop feeding the products listed below to their dogs.” The affected packages contain “elevated levels of Vitamin D.” You might say – so what?
