Healdsburg company gets patent on ‘farmaceutical’ supplement for pets, livestock

Chickens in need of a form of “farmaceutical” for their digestive tracts are the prime target for a new product introduced by a Healdsburg firm. ISOThrive Inc., a microbiome therapeutics company, announced three weeks ago the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has granted the farmaceutical for animals in the form of a prebiotic. Not to be confused with probiotic, a prebiotic feeds bacteria already in the body. The patent relates to a “maltosyl-Isomaltooligosaccharides” (MIMO) biomed concentrated as an animal feed additive or pet food supplement. ISOThrive produced a human version of the prebiotic about five years ago, a venture that

Faithful pets celebrated in annual Blessing of the Animals at area churches

Every year on or around the fourth day of October, people all over the world, residents of Orange County included, gather to celebrate St. Francis Day in honor of the patron saint of animals, Saint Francis of Assisi. In remembrance of his love for all creatures, guardians or pet parents traditionally take their animal companions to church for a Blessing of the Animals. According to the Humane Society, the earliest books about Saint Francis were written by Thomas of Celano, a member of Francis’ religious order who knew the saint personally. Thomas’ books reveal Francis’ love for animals and his

Chicago Animal Shelters See Uptick in Pets in Need of Care | Chicago News

Animal shelters across the city are seeing an increase this year in the number of pets coming through their doors after a relatively quiet 2020, during which few people gave up their pets, or “surrendered” them, to shelters. Jennifer Schlueter of the city-run Chicago Animal Care and Control says people are citing these surrenders to disruptions like returning to work or moving. But the increase in animals puts a strain on the shelter, she said. “What helped us the most during 2020 was those requests (to surrender a pet or bring in a stray) were really reduced, and what we’re
