CLEVELAND, Ohio — October is the month when cats rule!
Don’t believe us? There are multiple “days” celebrating the feline this month. And if that is not enough to convince you, cleveland.com’s Best of Cleveland team of Yadi Rodriguez and Brenda Cain decided to celebrate cat month with a search for the Cutest Cat in Northeast Ohio.
We put out the call, asking our readers to send us their cutest photo of their cat. We said we would take 100 kitties — but our inbox was quickly overwhelmed. So much so, that we had to push “paws” on the submissions.
Last week a team of cleveland.com staffers met and poured over the photos with the unenviable task of narrowing it down to just 20 purr-fectly adorable cats to move on as the Top 20 finalists. Meet them below.
Beginning tomorrow, Oct. 26, our readers will have the chance to vote, in an online poll, once each hour for the cat(s) they believe to be the most adorable. The poll will stay open until noon, Oct. 28.
We will verify the votes and announce Northeast Ohio’s Cutest Cat on Oct. 29 — which just happens to be National Cat Day.
Meet the Top 20
Meet Bear, a 10-year-old Nebelung, who is owned by Dina Dejanvic of Cleveland.
This is Bootsie, a 7-month-old rescue found near Firestone High School. “She is the loving, playful one in the family of seven cats” according to her human, Michelle Kurucz of Cuyahoga Falls.
(2nd) Chance is a 10-year-old rescue who greeted his human, Rachel Costanzo, at the cage door when she visited the shelter on Black Friday. As she held him, he slipped his paws inside her coat and “has been a loving cuddler ever since,” she said in her submission.
Charlotte is a 6-month-old Persian, described by her human as a “lovable and curious kitty, who loves Halloween.” She belongs to Missy Carmichael of Sheffield Lake.
Meet Cheeto, a 15-year-old tabby mix. She “picked” her human, Tracie Archer of Massillon, when she jumped onto a bench at an adoption event and leaned on Archer.
Cody is a 2-year-old tabby rescue. When Cody was adopted, she came with a toy — a little fox tied by a string to a stick. The string and stick are gone, but the fox remains her favorite toy and serves as her gift to her human. “When I leave the house, I come home to find that she has brought the fox to my last location — like my office or the kitchen. When I go to bed, I will often wake up to that fox on my bedroom floor,” said her human, Mary Wilburn. The pair live in South Euclid.
Daisy is approximately 12 weeks old and loves to explore, play with her toys, and snuggle up close to her new human momma. Daisy belongs to Jayme Pollock of Mayfield Heights.
Meet Fluff, a recent rescue. He loves to play and torture his brothers and then cuddle up next to his humans for a nap. His owner, Candie Diamond of Fairview Park says “Fluff is small but has filled our hearts with so much happiness and love.”
This 5-year-old tabby is named Frankie. His owner, Liz Spahr of Lakewood, describes him as “the perfect combination of playful and snuggly.” He sits in his own chair at the dinner table every evening in the hopes that someone might share a few scraps with him. He wrestles and plays with his cat brothers, Mario and Newton, but when it’s time to rest, Frankie likes to relax and get comfy like a pro.
Meet Gino, a 3-year-old Sphynx, who lives with Marilyn Stinette in Highland Heights. Stinette said Gino sleeps in bed with her every night, curled up in her arms.
This rescue is 11-year-old Jethro, one of 17 survivors of an abandoned apartment building near Lutheran Hospital. He was adopted by Nancy Wilson of Broadview Heights.
Meet Kennedy, described as a “mamma’s girl, sassy, and queen of the castle” by her human, Lauren Dudley of Broadview Heights. Dudley said Kennedy is always willing to cuddle and likes to be held while Dudley sings and dances.
Knox is a 5-year-old domestic shorthair, who lives with Jessica Jurcak in Lakewood. Jessica calls him “7 pounds of snuggle.” No matter how persistent Knox needs to be, he’ll make his way onto her lap or into her arms for ear scratches and cuddles. Knock your phone out of the way in the process? Look at that face. He’s innocent.
This 4-year-old rescue is Leo. He lives with his humans, Ken and Sue Grover in Medina. Sue describes Leo as a “troublemaker,” who enjoys napping and playing with toys, but he is afraid of birds.
Luna is a 4-year-old domestic Siamese mix rescue. Luna serves up more sass than any other cat. Her human, Alexis Moss of Lorain, describes her as “a straight diva, demanding your undivided attention.” She is never satisfied with her meal portions and always has to plop herself down in the middle of the action.
Meet Marsh-a-Mellow, AKA Little Miss. She is described by her human, Barbara Holliman as “sweetness with a whole lot of sassy.” Marsh-a-Mellow became part of the Holliman family when she was found as a tiny kitty abandoned in Holliman’s daughter’s neighborhood.”
Meet Molly, a three-legged cat, who lives with her human, Keith Ely in Strongsville. She is described as “by far the worst behaved of the four cats — always into something and pestering the other cats. She, as with all our cats, is well-loved and well cared for by our family.”
Mona is a rescue, believed to be about 3-years-old. Her owner, Erica Maysey of Cleveland, describes her as “very much a princess and rules the house. She acts like she doesn’t love her brother Huey, but I catch her grooming him all the time.”
Meet Riviera, a 10-month-old Mainlander – Maine Coon and Hylander mix. He is described as acting “like a dog, following me all over the house and even greets me at the door,” by his owner, Keelie Cline.
Meet Stanley, an 8-year-old Tuxedo cat, who had a rough start in life. Today, this “wide-eyed snaggle-toothed little man is the happiest, most brave cat alive,” according to owner, Colleen Cain, of Avon Lake.
